Videoblog: Wings around Britain and a tablet pc in the air

I already wrote some postings about the marvellous Wings around Britain project on which Polly Vacher is flying to more then 200 British airports for promoting the Flying Scholarship for Disabled project. On every flight she taks a dsiabled person with her in her small plane.
I had the honour of flying with her in Belfast. I shot some photos, wrote about my experiences and shot a video. And this one can be found over here. I have put three versions here so most of you can play it I think: a Windows Media version, a version for the iPod video (QuickTime) and the video from Dailymotion. You can all run them here on my weblog.
It is a compilation of around 5 minutes of a video of 35 minutes I shot. You see Polly working with the tablet pc looking with the JeppView software for landing zones before we headed off to Belfast City and after that you see us flying in her beautiful airplane. Again Polly using the tablet pc as navigation tool.
Do not expect a quite, smooth video, because I was filming from within the cockpit of this small airplane with every now and then some up and down movements

A tablet pc in the air: the Polly Experience

Well let’s give it a try. To write my experiences down here.

On the airport
At half past 12 I went to the meeting point at arrivals and gave Woodgate Charter Services a call. Some time later car arrived and picked me up. Great experience to see an airport from within. Passing all kinds of fences, checks and we were driving on the airport! Of course there was a securiy check in a small building. After that right to Woodgates office, which looks like a nice, comforable pilots home with a lot of wood. lt was weautiful weather with sun and some clouds.

Meeting fellow passenger and Polly
There I met my fellow passenger who was also flying for the first time. She was a disabled person who had the time of her live now. After a while Polly came in. What charming woman, what a charisma. She was able to give all the people attention. I showed her the EasyBook and JeppView and soon we had Belfast Aldergrove and Belfast City charts with the landingzones and landingstrips on teh tablet pc. Polly was very enthusiastic about the tablet pc and the charts. Some later she showed it to our fellow passenger.
Of course I could film Polly working with the tablet and took some photos. Then we went to the plane.

Flying!!
Wow man what a small plane this was. Great that I am a small person now. I had the backseat and had to put on a headphone with a mike. After a lot of checks by Polly of her plane we took off. Phew we were flying. What view we had of the surroundings. It was really great. Polly explained all the details of taxiing and the dashboard and things. We were really very excited.Every now and then we had a bump when there was a cloud or a mountain. We were laughing like children.
Meanwhile Polly used the tablet pc even in the plane, looking up details of the landingzone. That was great. I was able to put it on video. I filmed the whole flight!
It was really great to see all these lakes, mountains and little villages. And what a great view of Belfast we had when entering the landing zone! Beautiful. Polly flew some more to showus the surroundings and she was talking and laughing. She was very enthusiastic as we all were.

Save landing
Of course we were awaiting for the landing,would this give a bump, would we get sick? And you know, it was very very comfortable landing. Very smooth, we did not hardly felt it. Great!
Time for some official paperwork, handshaking and kissing and of course some photos.
You can find more photos. It was a great experience and would like to thank Polly and Trevor for making this possible. It was great to have the first PaceBlade EasyBook tablet pc in the Britain air!
Ok, packing my lugage now and flying back to the Netherlands

Wings around Britain: I will videoblog from a sportsaircraft!

Wings around Britain
On May 21 a great project will start:Wings around Britain. The challenge is to land at all 206 airfields in Great Britain.
Can you imagine: landing on all these airfields in 2 months! But that’s not all.

Polly Vacher
Polly Vacher (famous record breaking pilot) will take a disabled person on each sector wherever possible. Polly is well-known from Wings around the World Challenge, first woman to fly solo over the North Pole in a single engine aircraft, first woman to fly solo in Antarctica in a single engine aircraft, first person to fly solo around the world landing on all seven continents, 60,000 nautical miles, 357 days,

The aims of the project
The aims are: To promote “Flying Scholarships for the Disabled” and Flying for the disabled in general. Also to promote sales of the book “Wings Around the World” the proceeds from which go to “Flying Scholarships for the Disabled”.

What is Flying Scholarships for the Disabled?
Flying Scholarships for the Disabled (FSD) is a scheme whereby, through the mental and physical challenges of learning to fly a light aircraft, disabled people can rebuild their confidence so enabling them to restore their self-esteem. This in turn empowers them to explore their potential by extending their personal mental and physical boundaries. Each scholarship student completes a 6-week residential course of training, which includes ground school and up to 40 hours of dual and solo flying. This is provided at no cost to the student and currently flight training takes place at flight schools in the USA and South Africa. Watch this great video if you want to know more. Wow, what a project!

Videoblogging from the aircraft
Well and I am proud to be part of such a flight! I will fly with Polly on Wednesday in Belfast. Wew, should be great to shoot a video then for this weblog. Thank you so much Polly for taking me with you on this great trip.
And you know, an EasyBook tablet pc of PaceBlade on board is used as navigation tool! With JeppView of Jeppesen. Great case. I hope I can make photos and a video of the tablet pc in the aircraft. Not much room in such a plane I think.
Hmmm, and do I get sick? Well, let’s hope I am able to shoot the video. Belfast here I come!

Mivar Automotive and EasyBook tablet pc from PaceBlade

I visited Mivar Automotive on Autovak RAI 2007 and had a chat with Peter Odding. They are going to introduce their software for car collection on a tablet pc. The EasyBook of PaceBlade (disclosure: paceblade is a subsidiary of Tulip Computers, my employer). So again, this is a nice case. The software is originally developped for a PDA, but customers ask for a larger device (but not too large). And a lot of them want to skip the paperwork when a rented or leased car is inspected after returning.
He thinks a tablet is a great device because it is more robust compared to a PDA. And because it is a real pc it is easy to communicate (wireless) with the backoffice and other software. The camera is very handy when you want to record the damage for your electronic file.
Nice to see that the video of Le Mans Damage Company which I produced was installed on the easybook and shown to customers on the fair. I also saw some photos their which I took at Le Mans.
In this video you can hear Peter Odding talking about the tablet pc and his software. Because it is in Dutch you can find English subtitles on it.

Zoals al eerder geblogd zou ik naar de AutoVak RAI gaan voor een bezoek aan de Mivar Automotive stand. Ze zetten namelijk een EasyBook van PaceBlade in. Ik heb daar een video van gemaakt die later volgt. Maar hier staan alvast de foto’s.

Videoblog: Le Mans Car Damage with PaceBlade tablet pc

Because some people asked for it I produced an engish version of the Le Mans and PaceBlade video. You can find it in dutch in this posting. Ok, Jack is still talking dutch, but now you can read what he is talking about. I put some titles in english on those screens which are important. I hope you like it.

Two versions
The first video is a Windows Media version which can be run by clicking on the picture. The second video is a DivX version for high definition quality. You need a player for it, which you can download. If you like to see a full screen of the DivX version just rightclick and select Full Screen. Both version will run in your browser without first downloading the video.

The PaceBlade EasyBook
You can see Jack Tensen at work in his company Le Mans Car Damage. He is showing us the use of the EasyBook tablet pc of PaceBlade. All damage is entered in the tablet pc via a wi-fi connection. And you can see that all parts, images, details and specifications are used with the tablet pc. It takes half of the time comparing with paperwork and his calculations are without mistakes.

Bjorn has posted an excellent review on ultramobilelife.com in video. You can see the whole tablet pc with all the component and functionality. I think I am going to post a kind of video of my tablet pc: the PaceBook, later on this week.

He also posted my video of the use the EasyBook at Le Mans Autoschade and suggested if I could make an enlgish version. Ha that’s a good idea. Rene and I discussed that last week. So I will produce a new one with the titles added when Jack is talking dutch. The video in dutch can be found in this posting.

Le Mans Autoschade: tablet pc van PaceBlade voor expertise aan auto’s

Le Mans Autoschade
Gisteren was ik te gast bij Jack Tensen, directeur van Le Mans Autoschade in Amsterdam. Man dat was leuk! Een heel andere wereld. En ze gebruiken daar een tablet pc. (disclosure: ik werk bij Tulip Computers. PaceBlade is een dochteronderneming van Tulip en verkoopt tablet pc’s)

Efficiëncy
Mooi om te zien dat dat apparaat zo’n efficiency te weeg kan brengen daar. Elke schade wordt bij de auto direct in het systeem gezet. En op die tablet pc staan alle tekeningen, onderdelen en specificaties. Door een wi-fi verbinding met de server worden de gegevens opgehaald en bijgewerkt. Zodra de expertise klaar is, is de calculatie ook gereed.

Tijdwinst
Het scheelt ze de helft in tijd per schadegeval. Want in het verleden schreven ze alle taken die gedaan moesten worden op papier op en werd dat op kantoor nog eens overgezet in de computer. Dat is dus nu met zo’n tablet pc niet meer nodig.

Minder fouten in de calculatie
Ook is de accuratesse vele malen hoger, omdat de persoon die de expertise uitvoert bij de auto staat als hij de gegevens invoert en niet op kantoor zit om het uit te werken. Doordat hij bij die auto staat is zijn calculatie vrijwel direct goed.

Trots
Ik merkte dat Jack trots was op zijn bedrijf en op de manier van werken. Hij ging heel handig met die tablet om en was heel bedreven in het inbrengen van de gegevens. Je kunt dat zien op onderstaande video.

Video
In de video zie je Jack Tensen aan het werk met zijn tablet pc. Ik heb hem zo enkele auto’s zien behandelen. Je ziet hem alle schades inbrengen via aanklikmenu’s en tekeningen van de auto. Ik heb zowel een Windows Media versie van de video hier neergezet als een divx versie. Die laatste is aanzienlijk beter qua kwaliteit, maar je moet er even een playertje voor downloaden.
Het was leuk om een dergelijke video te maken en vooral ook om een mooie toepassing te zien van de EasyBook tablet pc van PaceBlade. Ik ga eens meer van dit soort toepassingen bekijken. Want zo krijg je toch een goed beeld van wat zo’n apparaat kan.
In een volgende posting zal ik de foto’s die ik gemaakt heb online zetten.

CeBIT dag 2: Erno Hannink op bezoek

Dag 2 had ik Erno Hannink op bezoek. De avond ervoor zijn we wezen eten in hetzelfde restaurant waar Erik van Roekel enthousiast over was: Marebo. Een heerlijke 2 persoons argentijnse schotel. Met van alles en nog wat. Maar wat nog fijner was het uitermate boeiende en diepgaande gesprek dat ik met Erno had. En dat ging niet over bloggen, web2.0, nee zelfs niet over PaceBlade (nou ja af en toe tussendoor dan). Nee dat ging over het leven, keuzes maken, veranderingen in de samenleving, bedrijven, persoonlijke drijfveren. Heerlijk, om zo weer eens met iemand te praten.
’s Ochtends zijn we na een eenvoudig ontbijtje met de auto naar de CeBIT gereden. Ik wilde nl. vanaf de beurs naar huis rijden in de middag. De afstand tot het beurscomplex was ongeveer 8 km, dus prima te doen. Ook geen file, dus dat schoot lekker op. Erno ontdekt onderweg nog een aangereden vos in de berm!

Op de beurs aangekomen werden we opgewacht door Rene Vlak, die Erno en mij voorzag van koffie. Hij vertelde over het feest dat de avond daarvoor op de stand van Tulip had plaatsgevonden. Erg gezellig en druk. Ondertussen kreeg Erno nog de nodige gadgets uitgereikt voor hemzelf en zijn kinderen. Zoals een 1gb usb stick van Tulip!
Na wat uitleg over PaceBlade en mijn rondleiding over de stand, ging Erno enthousiast en professioneel aan de slag met de EasyBook.
Wat ik opvallend vond, is dat hij het bluetooth toetsenbordje aan de kant schoof, om te ervaren hoe het is om met een online toetsenbord te werken. Kijk dat is nog eens de knop om zetten. Ik kan zelf nog niet goed wennen aan het feit dat onze interactie met de pc een heel andere zal gaan worden, waarbij het input device ook zal gaan veranderen.
De nieuwe generatie heeft daar niet zo’n problemen mee. Rene Vlak vertelde dat zijn kind niet om een toetsenbord vraagt als je het een tablet pc geeft. We, uh nee laat ik voor mezelf spreken, ik ben geprogrammeerd om met een fysiek toetsenbord te werken.
Erno heeft de EasyBook echt aan een duurtest onderworpen maakte diverse aantekeningen onderweg, zette foto’s over en plaatste daarna alles op zijn usb stick. Toen hij terug kwam, was hij toch meer dan 2 1/2 uur weggeweest en deed de tablet het nog steeds op de batterij. Ik moet er wel even bij zeggen dat hij de videocamera en fotocamera die standaard op het systeem zitten niet gebruikt heeft om batterijen te sparen.
Kortom: ik vond het mooi te zien hoe iemand met een dergelijk systeem kan werken. Je leest zijn review overigens op zijn weblog.
Ik vond het een geslaagde avond en dag. Alhoewel de afloop voor mezelf wat minder was 🙁
